TIME PARANOIA an Interdisciplinary Multimedia Performance
Tehran, Iran – November 2017 | DA Theatre House
In November 2017, the DA Theatre House in Tehran became the stage for the evolution of “TIME PARANOIA,” an interdisciplinary Multimedia performance that seamlessly blended sound, movement, and visual art. This iteration was part of the esteemed 35th Fajr International Theatre Festival, a significant event in Iran’s cultural calendar.
Building upon the foundation laid during its debut at the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art in 2016, this performance marked a pivotal moment in the collaborative journey of the Shoaie siblings. Sina Shoaie, known for his experimental approach to sound, collaborated closely with his sister, Soolmaz Shoaie, an interdisciplinary artist with a background in architecture and dance. Their combined expertise aimed to explore the intricate relationship between sound frequencies and bodily movement. Huis voor Dans, Beeld en Geluid | STUK
The performance featured three contemporary dancers, each embodying distinct instrumental elements from Sina’s composition. This embodiment was not merely interpretative but sought to decode and recontextualize musical patterns through choreography. Masoumeh Jalalieh, a performer deeply rooted in physical theater, contributed to the choreographic development, emphasizing the body’s role as both a receiver and projector of frequencies. Parvin Sanjoughi joined the ensemble, completing the trio of performers who navigated the complex interplay of sound and movement.Huis voor Dans, Beeld en Geluid | STUK
Arman Moghadam’s visual programming added another layer of depth to the performance. Utilizing real-time data analytics, Moghadam generated visuals that responded dynamically to the music and dancers’ movements. The stage design incorporated a 10×10 matrix video projection from above, complemented by additional projections on the backdrop and a semi-transparent curtain. These visuals, described as “generated patterns in new color cells,” evolved in tandem with the performance, creating a cohesive and immersive experience.
A significant technical advancement in this rendition was the implementation of a quadraphonic sound system. This spatial audio setup enveloped the audience, allowing for a more immersive auditory experience that mirrored the multidimensional visual and choreographic elements on stage.TCMF
“TIME PARANOIA” stood as a testament to the potential of interdisciplinary collaboration in the arts. By integrating sound, movement, and visual art, the performance challenged traditional boundaries and offered audiences a holistic sensory experience. The work not only highlighted the individual talents of its contributors but also underscored the rich tapestry of contemporary Iranian performance art.
