From 2006 to 2008, Sina Shoaie co-founded the electro-rock band ECBATAN in Kyiv, alongside composer and guitarist Ramin Safavi and lyricist Navid Soltani, contributing as a bass player and electronics artist. The band’s early momentum was eventually interrupted by the geographical dispersion of its members and a shifting landscape in the music industry. Upon returning to Tehran, Sina redirected his focus toward individual exploration, initiating workshops on frequency and human perception while presenting a series of experimental audio-visual performances. In 2010, he began a long-term collaboration with Arash Salehi through the pioneering platform “ Sar o Seda ”, which became a nexus for sound technology and audio-visual arts in Iran. Together, they co-organized workshops and events at venues such as Mohsen Gallery, contributing to the development of Tehran’s digital art scene. Sina’s work during this period included participation in TADAEX (Tehran Annual Digital Art Exhibition) from 2011 to 2013, as well as exhibitions like Limited Access at Aaran Gallery and MERXOUT at Shirin Gallery. His collaborative projects brought him into dialogue with a diverse network of artists including Sohrab Motabar, Qmars Kalami, Ali Phi, Hessam Dianpour, Soheil Soheili, Soheil Soltani, Amirhossein Bayani, AmirAli Ghasemi , Emil Lazar and Arman Moghadam among others.
About
While continuing to refine his skills in composition and sound design for film and theatre, Sina Shoaie began developing DEKA, an ambitious long-term musical project consisting of ten concept albums. The series was initiated with Time Paranoia in 2012, developed under the mentorship of renowned Iranian contemporary composer Nima A. Rowshan. During this period, Sina remained active in collaborative ventures, notably contributing to N+Ensemble, an audio-visual performance initiative with Sohrab Motabar and Ali Phi. In 2013, his creative path expanded into the realm of theatre, where he collaborated with prominent directors including Honey Hoseiny, Sajad Afsharian, Anali Shakouri, Amirhossein Mashaheri Fard, Shahab Anousha, Hamid MollaHosseini, Asma Ebrahimzadegan, Behrouz Gharibpour, and Ebrahim Amini. His sound and composition work featured in several productions presented at festivals such as MonoLive, Fajr International Theatre Festival, and Jashnvahe. Around this time, he also began teaching “Sound Design for Motion Graphics” at Inverse School in Tehran, further engaging with the next generation of multimedia and audio artists.
In late 2015, following an audio-visual performance by the Ghanbarimehr Ensemble and the presentation of Time Paranoia at the Tehran Contemporary Music Festival (TCMF) at the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art (TMoCA), Sina Shoaie initiated a new phase of interdisciplinary exploration. Collaborating closely with his sister, Soolmaz Shoaie—an architect, choreographer, and contemporary dancer—he began developing a multimedia performance inspired by Time Paranoia. To bring the project to life, visual programmer Arman Moghadam joined the team, contributing his expertise in decoding musical patterns into spatial markers. This method became the foundation for an evolving choreographic and visual language co-developed with Soolmaz. They later invited Masoumeh Jalalieh and Parvin Saljoughi to expand the choreographic elements and participate in the performance. The first outcome of this collaboration was showcased at the Untimely Festival, an independent contemporary dance event curated by Mohammad Abbasi. Building on this momentum, Time Paranoia was presented again in late 2016 at the Fajr International Festival in an enhanced immersive format at DA Theatre House, marking a significant step in Sina’s integration of music, movement, and multimedia performance.
In 2018, Sina Shoaie established Alien N’ Proud, an independent music label created to support experimental and boundary-pushing sound works. Building on this foundation, he co-founded RadioXargoosh in 2019 alongside writer and producer Sam Dolati, forming a creative audio production group focused on imaginative storytelling in sound. Serving as audio producer, Sina helped develop LUNAR—a full-cast audio drama podcast inspired by short science fiction stories from iconic authors such as Isaac Asimov and Philip K. Dick. The project featured an ensemble of talented voice actors including Mohammad Bahrani, Ariya Tavasoli, Payman Fatemi, Mona Ahmadi, Fariborz Karimi, Ehsan Mansouri, Behzad Almasi, Faegheh Tabrizi, and others, with most episodes directed by Sadeq Aeineh and visual identity crafted in collaboration with graphic artist Sheydrawgon (Sheida Rezaie). Over 20 episodes were produced and released between 2019 and 2021. During the pandemic, Sina and Sam continued their collaboration with Radio Adam—a minimalist, introspective audio drama podcast conceived, written, and narrated by Dolati. Despite catering to a niche audience, both LUNAR and Radio Adam reached over 50,000 plays shortly after launch, demonstrating the resonance of thoughtful audio storytelling during a time of global isolation.
In 2022, while based in Iran, Sina Shoaie actively worked in SimiyaGroup, collaborating with Honey Hoseiny, Arman Moghadam, and Majid Kiamehr on a series of immersive audio-visual performances, including Frozen and an interactive, immersive experience designed for children. In 2023, he rejoined SimiyaGroup in Toronto, continuing his trajectory as a sound artist within the Canadian art scene. His theatre sound design work includes Earworm, written and directed by Mohammad Yaghoubi, and Far Flung Peoples by Oijan Salahshour, which were presented at the Toronto Fringe Festival. Sina also contributed to Imagination Pattern, an interactive audio-visual installation by SimiyaGroup, showcased at the Tirgan Festival in 2024 at the Meridian Arts Centre. His collaborative portfolio expanded further through sound design and composition for Anahita Nowrouzi’s video art works (Half of the Red Sun and Hiding in Plain Sight), exhibited at the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec (MNBAQ). Additionally, he composed and designed sound for Cage of Dreams, a YouTube mini-mockumentary series directed by Maziar Ghaderi. Between 2014 and 2022, Sina released five solo albums—TIME PARANOIA – BIS – OD – CHARON and FROZEN . In parallel, he began working with the Post-Orientalism Music Label, contributing to the release of Radif of Iranian Music series , and released LICHEN I in collaboration with Niloufar Shahbazi with follow-up volumes currently in development.
